Taking your dog on holiday

Taking your dog on holiday

Holidays can be a great opportunity for you and your dog to spend some quality time together! Remember that all dogs are individuals and whether your dog has as much fun as you will depend on things like their age and health, and what your holiday plans involve.

Reminder that not all dogs will like the change and may not have as much fun as you will. Check with your vet to make sure that your dog is fit and healthy to travel and can keep up with the sorts of activities you’ll be doing while away. If you feel the experience will be stressful for your canine friend we strongly advise you to rather not take them on holiday.

Here are simple things that can make a big difference:

Travelling with dogs is easiest if you prepare everything well in advance – accommodation, travel arrangements, and medication can all be organised months before you go, which means less stress and more fun for both of you.

  • Before you set off, make sure your pet is in good health. Make sure their vaccinations are up to date, especially Rabies. That they are protected from parasites such as ticks and fleas and worms.
  • Make sure your accommodation is dog-friendly. Let them know you’re bringing your pet along so things are ready for your dog’s arrival.
  • Check that your accommodation is nice and secure with regards to fencing.
  • If you are staying in someone’s home or in a small B&B, before travelling with your dog ask about the presence of other animals. Will your dog be alright with other pets around?
  • Ensure your dog has everything they need for the first few days of the trip, until you find local supply sources such as food, water, treats, bedding, leash and collar with a tag.
  • If possible, take familiar items from home to help your dog settle in well, such as toys and comfy bedding. Like most humans, dogs love their home comforts!
  • If your pet needs prescription medication make sure you have enough for your entire holiday plus a few extra days.

Transporting your dog to your holiday destination

  • Make sure your pet is safely secure in the vehicle and not sitting on the drivers lap. We strongly suggest the use of Wild Woofy car chair covers.
  • Drive carefully and gently.
  • Stay calm so the dog doesn’t pick up stress from you. Be reassuring and avoid loud noises.
  • For the journey, take a non-spill water bowl and bottles of fresh water. A hydrated dog is a happier one, and they might need cooling down during the trip.
  • Stop every 2-3 hours to allow for you dog to stretch, have spme water and a bathroom break. Keep them on leash to make sure they don’t run off into traffic.

Arriving at your destination with your dog

  • The work doesn’t stop when you arrive at your destination, although by now you’re probably both ready for a bit of a rest! There are just a couple more things to think about, and then your holiday with your dog is ready to begin.
  • On arrival, avoid rushing. Keep your dog in the car until you have checked that the property is secure.
  • Go with your dog if you can, moving between rooms and around the garden until they’ve all been explored and your dog is comfortable.
  • Make sure everyone in the family is aware which areas your dog is allowed to access.
  • Place the familiar smelling items you brought in your dog’s bed or somewhere they will spend a lot of time. Providing something which smells familiar can help them feel secure when they are experiencing changes and new experiences.
  • Give your dog time and space to explore new places and people at their own pace.
  • Never leave them alone for any period which might cause them distress.
  • Holidays can be busy and exciting so it’s important to give your dog lots of time to rest undisturbed in a quiet and comfortable spot.

If you are leaving your dog at home

  • Book them into kennels or keep them at home with a pet-sitter, do what is best for your pet.
  • Make sure they have enough food and medication if they require.
  • Inform the person responsible for your about your pets medication and food as well as where your usual vet is located and their contact details

Whether your dog is going on an adventure with you or staying safely at home, remember to do whatever’s best for your pet. Even if they do stay behind, imagine how wonderful it will be to come back from an exciting holiday – and be greeted by their loud bark, sloppy kisses and undivided attention!
