Heat stroke warning

Heat stroke warning

Our hearts are heavy as we have had a number of pets with heat stroke this week. It happens faster than you realize and sadly heat stroke in pets can be fatal especially for certain breeds such as Staffies, pugs, Bulldogs and double coated dogs such as Huskies.

Prevention is key-

Never Leave in Vehicles: Even in the shade with windows cracked, cars can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.

Safe Exercise: Walk dogs only during early morning or late evening hours such as 6pm. Avoid intense play in high heat like chasing a ball.

Hydration and Shade: Ensure constant access to fresh water and, if outdoors, a shaded, well-ventilated area.

Surface Safety: Test the road surface; if it is too hot for your hand (hold for 7 seconds), it will burn your dog paws.

What to do if your dog is suffering from heatstroke:

Immediately move the dog to a cool, shady, or air-conditioned spot.

Cool with water: Use lukewarm or cool water (not ice-cold, which can cause shock) to soak their fur, focusing on the belly and paws. NEVER PLACE A WET TOWEL OVER THEM.

Use a fan: After wetting them, place them in front of a fan to enhance cooling.

Seek Veterinary Care: If the dog does not respond quickly, shows signs of distress, or loses consciousness, seek immediate Veterinary care. Call us or send us a WhatsApp to see if your pet is stable to move and if there are further at home measures to do before bringing the patient in. Dogs need to be seen immediately if they are showing signs of respiratory distress.
